We travelled by train from Berlin to Lübeck. I lived in Lübeck as an exchange student in the winter of 1979/80
It was amazing that I was still able to remember how to get to my school and the marzipan shop after 32 years. It was lovely to see Lübeck in summer, it is so much greener- obviously.
We stayed with my friend Frauke's parents who happen to live right near Lübeck in the former East Germany. They live in a beautiful restored barn that had been built originally in the 1600's.
It was interesting to be able to learn about what had changed since the reunification from locals. I had lived right near the border and there had been many different border protection mechanisms, of course nothing is there any more but Dieter and Gesa knew where they had been.
Dieter and Gesa had moved here from Hamburg and are very involved in the local village life, and also involved in the restoration of a ancient Lutheran church that had been left to crumble during the communist era. The restoration is fabulous.
What fabulous hosts Dieter and Gesa were, we had a fantastic time with them and enjoyed their home, garden, frogs and hospitality very much.
