Day 8 - Travel day - left La Fortuna and travelled to Monteverde. Monteverde is the highest point in Costa Rica and so it's a fair bit cooler as its in the hills and amongst the jungle.
It's a bit of a touristy town but it's very cute. I liked Monteverde it had a lot to offer. We arrived at around lunch time and so the immediate plan was to get some lunch. Fernado had suggested a chicken place which was really cheap and so that's where we went. It was delicious!!!
After lunch some of the group went and did a coffee / sugar cane / chocolate tour however because we had already done one we decided to go and checkout the butterfly garden. So after trusting Fernado to get us there using google maps he got us a little lost and so it was a longer walk than it was suppose to be. Very amusing, sarcasm always makes it better. Costa Rica has something like 52 species of butterfly all very pretty. Aside from the butterfly's the gardens also had many other insects and spiders like scorpions, tarantulas stick insects and the really cool praymanthis. Our guide was actually from Australia and she is living and working over here for a few months on some research projects to do with bugs / insects etc. She was a little too excited about bugs etc that we decided she must be good in bed because that's just not right. Overall though it was good and interesting.
After the butterfly gardens Fernado had been told about a big ficus tree that you could climb. Only problem was that he didn't know where is was. So after texting a fellow G Adventures tour guide he got a basic drawn map back that we needed to follow... guessing you can work out what the following conversations were after that. The positive is we got there eventually and it was actually really nice to just walk around the streets of Monteverde. The ficus trees are massive and hollow inside so you can climb all the way to the top if you wanted to and if you are skinny enough to get through the narrow bits.
After we spent a bit of time climbing the tree we headed back to the hotel to get ready for dinner. Had dinner at tico taco - fish tacos yum! Then we headed to the only bar in town. Started off a bit slow but then we got into it and had a bit of a dance session and a few drinks. Ended up being a good night and a very big night for some. Fernado got lucky with a German girl and so it ended up being the topic of conversation / lots of teasing for a few days.
Next day - zip lining, hanging bridges and night walk.
