Hello family and friends. We are nearing the end of our trip and are counting down the days! We made it to Nairobi from Kigali on one glorious bus ride that had no delays, no combusting tires and THEY FED US... amazing. We spent one week at a backpackers and had many lazy days watching our newly purchased pirated dvds (40 in 1!) and went to a few markets and loaded up on all the souvenirs we've been waiting to buy. Needless to say my bag is rather heavy and bloated. We went out last Friday to a group of bars called Gypsy's. There are actually 6 bars in it. One was a Moroccan style sheesha bar, sports, dance, ect. Then we caught a cab across the street to another place. We could see it from where we cabbed from but were told not to walk or we would be robbed. We are now doing a homestay with the founder of CSG Kibera and his wife and two young boys. We are volunteering with them right now in Kibera, the slum outside of Nairobi (the largest slum in East Africa). They have no water system or any sort of sanitation. The residents live in houses made of corrugated tin and there 'water system' is something referred to as 'the flying toilet' basically a river of poo and garbage that runs through the middle of the slum that everyone throws their waste into to. Abi almost slipped into it yesterday, yay for tetanus shots! I am currently teaching Edwina (the lady we're staying with) how to use excel for their accounting and will be teaching in the school next week. Abi and Steven are doing work for their cervical cancer unit. We're all very impressed with CSG Kibera and all that Dan has accomplished since starting it less than 10 years ago. He has started a safari company to help fund his projects which include a school, 2 hospitals, sports teams and much more. He lived in Kibera for many years and is very aware of the needs. I hope everyone's enjoying the start of summer! See you in less than two weeks!!
