18:45 - We spent today in the Tierra del Fuego National Park. Marcelo (our guide) and his bus picked us up at 9.30. Marcelo likes a joke and spent the day kidding around (in between explaining birds and flora around us). The walk was pretty short by our normal standards...only 3 hours. On the way Sunitta picked up a new nickname: Mushroom! Toby had discussed her dietary requirements as they were providing lunch and Marcelo being Marcelo picked up on the quirkiness of her relationship with food. She is a vegetarian but eats no uncooked veggies. She also claims to be allergic to mushrooms (but she self diagnosed the problem). She does end up mostly peanut butter, chocolate and crisps...hardly a proper vegetarian diet. It's been an enjoyable day as we did have a laugh. We had lunch on the beach next to the southernmost post office in the world where you could either send a postcard and/or get a stamp in your passport. We have dinner at 7.30 so I'd better be getting ready. Lateeeeeeer!
22:30 - Dinner was at another fish restaurant along the waterfront, not far from the docks. We got split onto two tables so the youngies went on one and the oldies (or wrinklies as David calls then), went on the other. The food was pretty good (personally I preferred last night's). We tried a bottle of Don David's (we'd seen it on the menu a few times but never tried it). We have become rather partial to Malbec. The restaurant was quirkie and had a lot of memorabilia, some was of the Che. I doubt it was original but you never know. During dinner Sunitta complained about our guide today: his english was crap! Coming from a fellow immigrant to the UK, I find that a little out of order. He made us all laugh and taught us a thing or two about the forest. We all thought the experience as a package was great even if he did not speak BBC english! At one point they brought out a live crab (they have a huge tank at the entrance) and Sunitta had to be turned away (she doesn't like the idea of us meat and fish eaters eating formerly live things). After me and Peter shared a pretty decent Tiramisu, Sunitta became particularly rude because she was not able to pay immediately and that really got my back up...you are in south america, you are with people at dinner, 10 more minutes will not kill you!!! So I did tell her that she was being rude, and she went off sulking like a child would do.
We are off for a boat ride in the Beagle channel tomorrow and will be seing sealions and penguins...it should be fun. It is also Lisa's 40's birthday tomorrow. Toby is sorting out a cake and went off to book a restaurant before going back to his room.
