We loved our visit to North Carolina this week. We started at the Biltmore in Asheville and the boys loved it. We weren't sure they would be into touring the Vanderbilt's lush grounds and "house," but we had a fun time. We took a picnic and ate in the gardens outside the conservatory before our tour. We finished the 4th with a local fireworks show and food trucks in downtown Asheville.
Wednesday morning we hiked Craggy Gardens with plans to hike the famed Chimney Rock and Hickory Nut Falls, but storms prevented us from that hike. We did get to look from town, but missed the second round of hiking. That's okay because we went to the Farmer's Market and took the boys to eat at a real North Carolina southern diner called Moose Cafe.
Thursday morning we left early to work our way to the Outer Banks in Kitty Hawk, NC. It would only be fitting to pick up a Steamer Pot of seafood for dinner at the campground. Yum!
Friday was a very busy day. We stopped by the Wright Brothers Memorial and got to see where they launched their famed "First Flight." Next we stopped in Duck, NC for lunch at Coastal Cravings. Okay, it was on Diners, Drive-ins and Dives, but it was really good! After lunch we went to Corolla to drive the Jeep on the beach and see the famous wild mustangs. So, the are not frolicking in the surf like a romance novel and the ads would promote, but it is a very unique experience. The horses that we found (yes, we had to go looking for them) were beautiful. Driving the Jeep on the beach was super cool and fun! We stopped to swim for a bit too. After rushing home to shower and go out to dinner for Beth's birthday, we ended the day by playing putt-putt while watching more fireworks. I think we all hit the pillows around 11:30pm. A long, but great day. Next stop.....Colonial Williamsburg and Pennsylvania Dutch Country. Stay tuned and thanks for joining us on our adventure.
