We arrived in Camden and first on the agenda was getting fresh lobster for a lobster bake at the campsite. Another yummy meal!
Sunday morning we set out for a fun hike and picnic up Maiden Cliff Trail which is a great hike with beautiful views of the Megunticook Lake. The cross in the background of the photos are in honor of 12-year old Elenora French who fell off the cliff in1864 while trying to catch her hat that had blown off in the wind. Beckett was very busy picking wild blueberries along the trail. We plan to make a blueberry pie this week. Will let you know how that turns out.
If you are ever in the Camden/Rockland, Maine area, do yourself a favor and go to Primo for dinner. It is located in a beautiful restored New England home with a large garden of which they gather their produce for the restaurant. Amazing farm-to-table dining.
On Monday we left for Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park. We stopped along the way to see Ft. Knox and the Penobscot Narrows Bridge Observatory. Ft. Knox was a great lesson in early American military defense and the observatory was cool with great views of the river, mountains and town.
On Tuesday we hiked to Bar Island during low tide. The boys really enjoyed seeing the tide changes and the differences of high and low tides. The night before we saw that the island was about 1/4 mile plus away and today we were walking across to that island. This was a cool experience. After lunch we met up with Papa Bill who was in Bar Harbor for a cycling trip. We were lucky enough to have our schedule connect and get to spend the afternoon and evening with him. We went to dinner at the famous Thurston's Lobster Pound for a delicious meal. We were hoping to drive up Cadillac Mountain to see the sunset. Unfortunately, we were socked in with fog and just enjoyed our meal and time with Papa Bill.
We were lucky enough on Wednesday to have the weather clear, so we went to Jordan Pond and Eagle Lake in Acadia National Park. We took the bikes and rode the Carriage Trail and did three hikes. It was a lot of biking and hiking and the boys were troopers. We hiked Conners Nubbel, North Bubble Trial and the South Bubble Trail to Bubble Rock. Yes, we took the funny pictures of us either holding up or pushing down the rock. It was one of our favorite days on the trip so far.
Thursday was also a fun day of exploring Maine. Captain Robertson took us out on his lobster boat in Milbridge. We cruised out to Petit Manan Lighthouse to see puffins, sea birds and seals. After, we went lobstering with Capatin Robertson and he taught all we need to know about lobsters and the business of lobstering. We were scheduled to have a lobster bake on one of the islands, but do to weather cancelling us the day before, Captain Robertson was able to squeeze us into a shorter excursion. It was a fun day and beautiful too! We went back into Bar Harbor for our last meal in Maine and we couldn't miss having lobster ice cream at Ben and Bill's Chocolate Emporium. Bryan was the only one who liked it, but glad we all tried it.
As you can tell, Maine was truly a highlight for us and we cannot wait to come back and explore more of this great state. Now, off to Canada
