Rush and Luge - Extreme Adventures
Frans Travel Update:
On Saturday we went to Cathedral Cove first which was breathtaking! the water was so clear and it was so strange to see these random large rocks coming out of the sea! We then went to Mercury Bay. NZ is a volcanic Island and as such has hot springs. We went to the beach were you can dig wholes in the sand and the hot water fills them up. Depending on where you dig will depend on how hot the water is. It can get scolding as well which is so wierd! That afternoon we made our way to Tauranga and Mt Maunganui where we bought some fresh mussells and took a walk down the habour. By this time it was 6.00pm and we wanted to make our way to Rotorua for the night (which was about 1 hours driveaway) so we made our way there hoping to catch some of the All Blacks game against Ireland. One of the first things you notice about Rotorua is the SMELL! Oh my god - it stinks! The hot springs are Sulphur based so it smells like rotten eggs!
Unfortunaltey we didn't catch the Rugby as it took a while to cook tea and get to Rotorua however, we went out for a few beers and got chatting to some Newzealanders out on a stag do! Some of them were from England originally and it was really cool to speak to them. They were really hospitable and they invited us along for the evening. We ended up having a right laugh with them and staying up to watch the England game and having some really cool shots called strawberry cheese cake! Needless to say it was a really late night but definatley worth it!
On Sunday we got up and got going to do some lugeing. This is were you take a cable car up the side if a mountain and then sit on something similar to a go cart and make your ways down the mountain on a race track - this was sooooo cool! it went really fast! Jonny, Shirl and I enjoyed trying to ram each other off the track - its definaltey a big kids game! After the Lugeing we went to look at the thermal pools which are like craters of hot water and clay which are bubbling away near the surface - very strange! After that we fixed the radio on the van ( it had sparked and died earleier that day) and made our way out of Rotorura to Taupo for the night. Once we arrived at the hostel we were so tired that we just stayed in and watched a bit of TV and went to bed.
