Right, two weeks since my last entry so about time I updated you on what's been going on.
Fully settled into my new home now. Hardly see the other housemates so it's a very quiet place which suits me just fine. I don't spend much time here anyway because I'm always out studying or (more likely) seeing a few sights.
We'll get studying out of the way first. Dispute resolution has nearly come to an end. We've had a whistle stop tour through negotiation and mediation styles and techniques as well as coping with difficult situations such as different cultures and mass group meetings. The personality test confirmed that I like my own company, prefer facts to feelngs and like to finish what I start. Unfortunately this seems to be at odds with the rest of the group I am currently working with who are far more interested in feelings, chatting rather than working and lose interest after a while.
Indigenous legal studies is very fascinating. We've covered Aboriginal culture and history and are beginning to look at the substantive stuff now. I can't comprehend that at the time Hitler was being condemned worldwide Aboriginals were still being contained in secure villages for their own 'protection'. In some parts of Australia even today Aboriginals face discriminatory measures from governments. Australia remains the only western nation to have been put on the UN's international human rights warning list.
Burford School were in town last week. I managed to meet up with them coming off a 30 min jet boat ride round the harbour and then went on for lunch with them over in Darling Harbour. Managed to get over to Manly on the Monday to see the end (took a while to find them!) of the football match. Great to see and English team beating an Australian side after that humiliating affair at Headingly! Really nice to meet up and chat to the lads and the teachers - a reminder of home and also a chance to catch up with what's been happening in Uganda as Mr Bassett had just come from there. Sounds like they've had a great trip.
Burford got some nice weather for their visit but it was nothing on today's temperature - 28 degrees. Not bad for winter. Went over to Watsons Bay today with the exchange guys. Gorgeous weather and stunning views accross the harbour right over to the centre of Sydney topped off with fish and chips on the site of the oldest fishing port in Australia at Doyles. Really nice relaxing day in the sun. More weather like that please mother nature!
Been busy booking holidays as well. Off to Uluru (Ayres Rock) In a few weeks - possibility of camel riding, sunrise and sunset over Uluru, kayaking in Kathrine Gorge and some scenice water holes. I've done so little work so far it seems strange thinking about holidays. Maybe I should feel guilty about not working very hard... Nope.
6 weeks until uni games. yet to meet the rest of the bowls squad. Doubt they've been anywhere near a bowls green for quite a while. I'm slowly getting the hang of my new woods after a few roll ups at the local club but I'm not convinced the rest of the team will be worried about winning so much as partying!
That's it for now. Will be up all night next weekend praying for a better result in the cricket. My status and reputation over here hangs in the balance until then!
