It's amazing how quickly you can pack up a tent when you are being swarmed by midgies in the pouring rain! I think we were both suffering last night after mis-timing the shop opening hours and having to make do with a 2 pints (well, cans) of lager and a packet of crisps and a few sneaky ginger biscuits each for dinner.
It was definitely a good idea to head out to Oban a day early. The weather was fairly rubbish when we woke up on Friday morning so we packed up as quickly as possible, purchased some baguettes, ham and squeezy cheese and headed off in search of a bus to take us into town.
The train took us inland to Crainlarich where we had an hours wait till the next train to Oban…perfect amount of time for a cheeky pint. On the way down we got talking to an older couple who kindly bought us poor travellers a pint. We need to start paying attention to how steep the downhill is with our bags so that we can prepare for lugging them back up later….it was tough going but we made it.
We arrived without having booked any accommodation (we had a hostel booked for Saturday) so off we went in search of a bed for the night. After quickly realising that the hotels were well expensive, we found the street of B&Bs. James was (quite rightly) insistent that we get a B&B as we were both suffering a bit from a few very cold and damp nights camping. After finding a quiet little B&B and getting some breakfast thrown in there, we headed out to see what Oban had to offer.
It turns out, Oban has quite cheap Guinness J…poor James has got a cold, so of course the Guinness was purely medicinal.
Saturday morning we rose early and lugged our bags down a few doors to our hostel. Although we couldn't check in until 3.30, we left our bags and headed out for a walk around the town.
Podge has quietly been ravaged by the midgies and poor thing has quite a few…but James is being very good at telling her not to itch them….grrrrrrrr.
Spent a few hours walking around Oban, James gave in and bought a pair of trousers. Went to a lovely little café for some lunch (Carolyn's café - can recommend for a cheap lunch!), bought some Whisky (again, medicinal for James) and headed back to the hostel to check in. And this is where we are now, drinking tea!
Tomorrow we head to the East coast to see family/friends for a few nights, then to Edinburgh!
But for now….might be time to go and find some more of that cheap Guinness!
Over and out xxx
