We were met by one of our hosts in the middle of a square, not knowing where we would be staying. Luckily it was quite close by and they meet all of their guests in the square to avoid any confusion with the narrow lanes leading to the apartment. It was nice enough, no outside windows, but it would do for a few nights. After a bit of a rest, we headed out in search of a supermarket for dinner. Turns out we are in a perfect little place, supermarket less than 5 min walk away and a few little bars around the square.
Dinner was interesting…let's just say that the apartment was not so well catered for and we've become proficient at cooking rice in a frying pan! After dinner we headed out to the main square for a quick beer before bed time. By the time we got back, we had another lodger in our apartment…what looked like a cockroach was scuttling about the floor. James tried admirably to catch him, but then he seemed to disappear. Confident that we'd chased him away, we settled down for a night….if only I hadn't decided to move my shoes…a girly little scream later and James was well aware that I'd found Cocky the roach again. I won't go into the details, but he was eventually evicted from our apartment. …. Only to be bugged for the rest of the night by a damn mosquito. Knowing how I reacted in Amsterdam to the last one, I was fully covered up in the sheet all night, with only my face showing……yes you guessed it - queue almost elephant man type jokes at my face.
Second day in Seville was lovely, we had a nice walk to the Placa de Espanya which was/is a big government complex. It was beautiful! Then we walked back through town (everything seemed to be really close!) past some of the other landmarks - the presidential palace, the bull fighting ring and the cathedral, had a spot of tapas (not at the place that was recommended unfortunately as there were no tables outside - but great tapas nonetheless!) and headed home for a siesta - it was seriously hot.
That evening, we went in search of a Flamenco bar and a cocktail that had, again, been recommended to us. After a (very) short walk, we found it and settled in with a litre of the local cocktail waiting for the show to begin - wow did it get hot in there! It looked so unassuming from the front, but through the back was where all the action happened. Around 10pm, the flamenco trio came out and started to perform. To those that haven't seen a live flamenco performance before (us included) it was a bit odd to begin with and was just a man singing along to the guitar. But then a fabulous looking lady with the strongest calves we've ever seen, got up and started dancing. Wow, it was powerful! We stayed for a few hours (and had another litre of this cocktail), but were mindful that we had to get back, pack and then get up early for our train to Barcelona.
On a high, we headed back to the apartment and gingerly opened the door, expecting Cocky's cousin to be waiting for us when we got it….luckily we were bug free so set about packing and sorting ourselves out for the morning.
So, we'd been told that all we needed to do was leave our apartment and head down a few streets until we got to a row of taxis. It's Sunday morning, about 8am, we arrive where we think there should be taxis…and there aren't any. So I (Podge) start to panic a little bit…its just under a 2km walk to the train station (a route that we don't know), it's hot and we have our big bags - what are our options?! As usual, calm James takes over and suggests that we keep on walking up the street that we are on…oh! What is that I can see in the distance?! Is it a line of taxis?!
Phew. We made it to the train station with time to spare and settled down for our journey to Barcelona. 5 hours and some very comfortable seats - this is going to be a dream….
