Ruthie's Travels
Hi peps!
Still in KL which i've noticed has more of an Indian/Arab influence in comparison with the citchness of Singapore.
We're staying in one of the top 10 rated hostels in the world called the 'Red Palm Hostel' it is a small malaysian style hostel which is quite basic but comfortably so with a real cosey, welcoming, relaxing and overall pleasent atmosphere. There is low lighting lots of fans and decorative throws and pillows, a big TV with a very cosmopolitain collection of DVDs, a internet bench with three computers, and a selection of flyers/leaflets and lonely planet books forming a sort of mini library where you can pull up a poof and settle down to decide on what your going to expierience tomorrow!(read into that how you wish!) There is a clean shared toilet/shower room and a lovely smell of washing in the step down back kitchen/washroom area. There is a trusting/hospitable vibe to this place you pay 1 rgt for water/coke from the fridge into a little carboard box on top, help yourself to tea and fruit and just make a note in the log book of when you went on the internet so you can settle up at the end of your stay.
The lady that runs the hostel is very talented at anticipating peoples needs and spends the day pottering round with a younger girl laundering guests clothes, cleaning toilets and making people feel welcome either by asking them about their day out exploring (although i'm sure she's heard the same stories thousands of times over!) or by making comforting gestures like ajusting the fans to suit your position in the room or by fetching you a coconut juice from the stall outside and refusing payment on the grounds that you look hot- she probibly doesn't realise that's my natural colour!!
We are however- alas having to move on tommorow to another hostel...across the road (oh the effort!!) as we only pre booked 3 nights here and unsurprisingly our twin room has already been booked out again. The place across the road is very what i believe is called 'boho chique' it has been newly decorated in tasteful mordern colours and has trendy decor throughout. There is a small court yard out front with metal tables in amoungst spiky pot plants and what look like christmas bobbles hanging over the enterance foyer! (getting some interesting ideas for the garden on that note!) There should be a picture of it on the internet- its called 'Number eight guesthouse'.
We have been making a running comenary of our travels using Beccas video camera some bits of which are quite amusing (especially to us- but i have a feeling they are the kind of funny where you would have to be there!) Oh yes- and we've seen lots of great sights including a family of monkeys that wondered out onto the street as we were getting a taxi home from the butterfly sanctuary yesterday.
We also went to this amazing open roofed swanky bar on the top floor of a skyscraper where we drank expensive cocktails (AKA: the price of ones back home), listened to chilled out Jazz music next to a truley beautiful swimming pool with a fountain running into it...oh yeh whilst looking out onto the most spectacular skyline i've ever seen in my life with a warm breeze blowing gently and the distant rumbellings with the occational flashing of a distant storm over the hillside many miles to the north!..jealous yet?
Well i had better go before one of my fingers falls off..this could well be the longest entry i ever write but we'll see- i guess it's difficult to narrow down expieriences you are so enthused by!!
Likes so far: Lychee Martini
Dislikes so far: the smell of Ginsing/parts of KL
Lots of love,
Ruthie. xxx
ps. apoligies in advance for any spelling/gramatical errors with these entries i've clearly been out of Britain so long i've forgotten how to write!!
