We were thinking about how to get down to Melbourne and everyone said just fly. This seemed a bit boring, as well as quite expensive, and we wanted to see some of the country.
We had looked into renting a car but then someone told us about 'relocation campervans' for 5 bucks per day! This basically means that the rental agency wants the van in back in Melbourne so instead of paying one of thier staff to drive it down fom Sydney they let joe public bring it down for cheap price. So we ended up paying approximately $120 between us (extra insurance, a map etc) and had the van for 3 days. Luxury overnight accomodation was obviously included and they also threw in $110 of fuel which basically coverd the journey, we only had to pay for any detours. Quite a bargin I think!!!
Is roughly an 11 hour drive, scenic and not busy the roads were really long with nothing in between towns. We stopped off in a few places along the way and stayed overnight in a camper park roughly half way. One stop was in Ned Kelly country where he made his last stand. The highlight of the place being a massive statue (see pics).
Arrived in melbourne in good time, and didnt get lost once!!!
