When we arrived at Puerto Vargas there were forest fires burning with smoke drifting everywhere. Yesterday the smoke intensified and it was so bad we had to shut the windows in our hotel room to keep it out. This morning we set off for the airport as planned but the smoke was thicker. On the motorway we crawled along to the toll only to find the junction to the airport closed so our driver was forced to go via Ponte Mott, this was ok until we ground to a halt again and crawled along at walking pace. Eventually we were ready to rejoin the motorway to the airport to find it closed because of an accident and we were diverted onto local access roads at walking pace. We eventually arrived at the airport 15 minutes before the flight was due to take off. We rushed in and somehow managed to get on the plane. I am writing this as we fly through the smoke to get wonderful views of the lakes and mountains as we fly south. Hopefully our luggage will be onboard as well!
