Good news our luggage also caught the plane. We flew to Punta Arenas which is as far south as we go. The Torres de Paine are 250 miles north of the airport. The land was very flat at first and reminded us of the lowlands of Scotland. As we drove further north along the road called "the route to the end of the world" it became more mountainous until we reached Puerto Natales, where we are staying tonight. The small town is on a sea loch about 25 miles from the Pacific Ocean and the same distance from the Atlantic Ocean. It is very windy here as we found during our walk along the shore. We stumbled across a barn with a sculpture gallery inside. Fantastic pieces from stone, bronze and wood with prices ranging from £1,500 to £10,000. These are local artists and we saw one carving stone outside during our visit.
Chile is rightly proud of its artisans and artists and feels a country comfortable with itself having recovered from what locals call the dark side ( General Pinochet and his predecessors).
