Today we had a mystery tour called Romahue. We were given no info about it and were vaguely expecting to see the lakes and possibly a museum.
The driver who picked us up spoke no English and so we were none the wiser. Romahue is a farm where the owners are trying to support the local ecology. http://romahue.cl/en/
Initially we went on a trek through virgin forest which had not been cultivated in anyway. Much of the forest is on top of the river and so the trees are hydroponic and the forest floor bounces as you walk along it. We saw many different plants, trees and birds including a fresh water cormorant.
After the walking tour we went horse riding, despite our initial nervousness we really enjoyed ourselves as we went through the countryside. Passing through a field of bulls was interesting, fortunately our horses were well behaved.
It was then time for a delicious lunch of beef and lamb from the farm cooked on a wood fire where we got to meet other members of Silvio, the owner's family. After lunch we went on a boat tour down the river which was completely overgrown in the forest. Our boat had a draft of a few inches and even then touched the bottom from time to time. The river had trout and other fishes plus many birds.
Finally we went to see the animal rescue centre which had parakeets, an owl, kestrel, wild cats, foxes, small deer and Pumas. The adult Pumas were huge the size of a small lion.
It was a magical place and a wonderful day.
