Rome was a city full of ancient ruins, underground discoveries and many many amazing monuments dating back 2000 years ago
We arrived at our hostel to find a double room that was hardly small enough to turn around without falling over ryans feet, however we had cable tv Which was a bonus although the Aussies were not in the world cup final :s !
I'm still struggling to get my head around how the Romans built such sites as the colesseum, and st peters basilica of the Vatican city ! They are seriously huge, with ridiculously carvings that no one could possibly come up with today.
We had 5 nights in Rome as we felt the usual 3 would not be enough to see everything, there was just an endless amount of site seeing to get done. The train system was the worst we had come across, we later found out that the lack of underground lines was due to the continuous discovery of ancient underground ruins that are in the way of the new lines being built !
Elena, albertos sister came to visit and she would kick on to chill out with us in sorrento, positano and amalfi afterwards to relax before heading on a month long camper trip in the UK
We pumped out so much site seeing in 4 days, probably walking 20 kms or more. Some of the sites we saw were:
Colesseum
Pantheon
Piazza navona
Roman forum
Skull church
Spanish steps
Trevi fountain
Vittorio Emanuel II- wedding cake
High court
Vatican city
Vatican museum
St peters basilica
I managed to find time to catch up with a friend Michael Gallacher who moved to Rome 7 years ago to being his studies to become a priest. He now only has 2 years left, it was great to see he was still the same fun guy that he was before he left.
We found a great square one night campo dei fiori, where we had aperitivo at baccanale- (buy a drink for 10 euro and you get unlimited food), and the last night we went to a mozzarella bar called obika, where we shared cutting boards of cheese and meats. I was loving life ! We also had some very funny entertainment in the square with a man doing magic, well it was funny seeing him try to do some of the tricks. Also a girl and guy having a huge domestic providing 30 mins of seeing how tough Italian women can really be ! She didn't take a breath or blink in this time ahaha
Termini station was our transport hub with all the major buses and trains ending here! It felt like an airport there was that many underground sections and tunnels.
On the last night, we took a massive hike past the Vatican and towards the top of a hill that would overlook Rome. Up here I Learnt how to take pictures at night with shutter speed adjustments ! Haha it's only taken me 3 months to work this out ! :s
Right now im very excited on the train to be heading down to the south coast of italy, although having to pass through the home of the mafia Naples ! We will move onto sorrento and the amalfi coastline :)
