Ross and Natalie's Travel Journal
We arrived in our 7th country Indonesia -Bali and met up with our friends from England, Jim and Jody. We went to the southern coastline of Bali and stayed on Legian beach which has a stunning long stretch of beachfront, bars and shopping. The breakfast at the guesthouse was very strange, a jam jaffle (like a pop tart) with black unfiltered coffee, leaving black bits in your teeth afterwards...nice!! The bombings happened here in 2002 and there are more hawkers than tourist and the hassling sometimes gets a little bit too much.
We decided to head to the east coast and hired out own Jimmy for the drive. At Sanur we had the most awful boat experience. The boats are like boatman insects and are supposed to balance over the waves...it bloody nearly turned over the waves. A German family on the boat with us all spewed and Jody got very close to doing the same...the sea was extremely rough! We eventually got to the snorkeling area and it the water was crystal clear with colorful tropical fish. On Lembongan Island Ross and Jim tried the surfing thing. Apparently the board was to small or something...that was the excuse for non performance!! We headed north to Padang Bay which has some lovely secluded beaches and we had a glorious day at Blue Lagoon Beach. We spent our evenings at the Reggae Bar on the beach drinking cheap but wicked Chaprinia's and eating fresh seafood (Jim had tuna every night!!). Further north we went to the small town of Tulamben and drove through Balinese Villages of art and crafts, emerald green rice paddy's with the huge Gunung Agung Volcano on our side. The beach was surprising, black sand, pebbles and crystal blue waters...not the usual sandy beach. There is a famous WW11 ship wreck called the Liberty Wreck that was torpedoed by the Japanese and it is one of the best dive sites in Bali. Snorkeling around the wreck was fantastic and we saw huge barracudas, colorful coral and it was the definite highlight of our trip.
Jim and Jody only had ten days with us and we went back to south coast. We had great beach days and many drunken nights! Ross and Jim attempted surfing again, this time on longer and larger boards. Ross got the hang of it and we only saw Jim get up a couple of times...they had chaffy nipples (red raw) after!! Jim and Jo treated us to a night of Sushi on our last night and it was very sad to say our good buys (thanks guys, we had a great time!).
We where on our own again and felt a little homesick. Luckily we met up with the two newlyweds, Pete and Angela in Seminyak. We had a fantastic night with the honeymooners at a really fancy bar watching a stunning sunset and enjoying their terrific company...thanks guys we loved it!!
So that was Bali in a nutshell. We had to get going again and caught the ferry to Lombok.
