The world is my school an today my classroom was the War Remnants Museum and Cu Chi Tunnels in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. I am going to write 2 perspectives of the Vietnam War. I am going to pretend that I am a Vietnamese guerilla and an American soldier.
VIETNAMESE GUERILLA
The Americans have no business here. They can't just come in the middle of our war! I have to set these bombs and run! Because no one can see me, a guerilla, I have to very quickly put my traps and bombs and things in the ground then run so no one sees me! I got a little bit of help because the Russians gave me some guns.
I hope these traps work. They are very brutal traps. The top is disguised then when you step on it you would fall on big sharp bamboo sticks dipped in dirt or poison. They also have the door trap were you open the door and big spikes come shooting right out and would stick into you! The cool thing is that they are made out of things the Americans have brought here- we are fighting them with their own bomb scraps.
I am scared to go out because of Agent Orange. The Americans sprayed this chemical to kill the jungles. Then it got in people's blood and body so when they have a baby it will come out with no legs or hands or you will have twins connected. Not only us guerillas got it inside of us, so did the Americans. We got out of it by building an underground world sort of. We hate living underground but we would rather do that then die. We didn't only build it because of agent orange there was also napalm where you spray it and it turns into flames so thing catch in fire and there are a lot of bombs!
AMERICAN SOLDIER
The war has been going on for a while and I just got a card that said I am being drafted so here I go into a terrible war. The Americans entered the war because instead of just voting if Vietnam was going to be communist or not Ho Chi Minh and his government started killing people and forcing them to be communist. At first America just gave them advice then guns and things then when the war got brutal they started to send troops. I really don't want to do this at all I mean we have lost so many men.
I am in the war now and my friend just died and I want to try my best to not leave any man behind so I need to get my friend in a helicopter and in a body bag so he can go back to his family and his family can give him a funeral and all the other kinds of things you do when someone dies. Now we are spraying Agent Orange but we are doing it for a good reason, here it is. The guerillas are hiding in the jungles and putting traps and sneaking up and killing us so we are spraying the jungles so they don't have anywhere to hide! We are killing some innocent people. We are doing that because the guerillas are hiding in the villages and the guerillas are just families too so we can't tell the difference between nice families and guerilla families. I feel so bad about this that I am starting to get mad with myself.
Finally the war has ended and all of the brutal and terrible things that happened are done. Now there is a huge evacuation to get out of Vietnam. We know that if we leave the southern people here that the northerners will just kill them so we brought them with us. Then we realized that there was still a lot of Americans here so we just took them first. It ended up that over 100,000 people from South Vietnam came with us but many stayed. The communists killed 30,000 people from the south that were on a list they found in the American headquarters. Vietnam is now all communist. I am so glad I made it back home but right next door to me they are crying because their son didn't make it home.

Gran Gautney Rosie, You did a wonderful job of presenting the two sides of the story. That approach helps us more fully understand what has happened. There certainly are no winners in war! We go home and leave devastation and need for rebuilding just as we recently did in Iraq. When will we learn that war is seldom a viable answer. Not only were the people hurt but their animals and vegetation too. How did their religious beliefs jive with going to war? Keep up the good work, Love, Gran
Paige Rosie, I enjoyed hearing the story told from two perspectives. I think that it is very important for you to learn about this war. It was an important event in history. It is really sad how many animals and plants were destroyed because of the Agent Orange. The landscape will never be the same. I hope you are having the best time there. Miss you!
