Got a slow start this morning due to having too much fun last night in Madrid. But move, we must, as tonight is scheduled for Salamanca, by way of Segovia and Avila.
Segovia is a beautiful town with a Roman aqueduct that is very well preserved and is found at the enterance of the old town . Tino gave a brief tour of the town, before leaving us for good. The Moorish influence is evident also in the town, as many of the buildings are covered in various types of plaster. Since it was a Sunday with gorgeous weather, there were many locals out enjoying their “pre lunch” at the numerous cafes.
After some free time in this charming town, we boarded the bus for the walled city of Avril. Avril is the best preserved walled city in Spain. This beautiful wall looks like it was just built! Had some free time here, strolling the pretty streets, and stopped in for a quick glance at the beautiful cathedral, which was built with primarily rose colored granite, and decorated with beautiful stained glass, as well as priceless artwork. Stunning!
Next it’s off to Salamanca for a city tour.
Arrived in Salamanca, checked into to hotel (which originally was a convent) and then it was off for our tour with the delightful Maria as our guide. Maria shared with us her love of her city filled with many beautiful churches, convents, and universities. Walked to their beautiful Plaza Major, and into what was a private home, but is now a library, with its large interior courtyard and view of the cathedral spires. Continued to the cathedral where we were treated to a lovely singer as we admired this lovely church in all its glory .
Back to the hotel for a drink in the terrace, dinner and then went out to view the skyline at night with its illuminated towers and church roofs. Next went across the street to check out the building courtyard that was lighted up for the evening. Fantastic , but it has been a very long day, so off to bed. Tomorrow we venture into Portugal!
