Off to an early start for today’s stop in Granada. On the way making a stop at Alahambra. This UNESCO sight atop the Assabica hill is one of the finest examples of Moorish architecture, and was once the residence of the Royal family.
Continued on our journey through the most beautiful countryside. Literally miles upon miles of olive trees. Spain is the biggest producer of olive oil in the world, and it looks like this area grows most of it. Up through rolling hills in to the dry countryside with grove upon grove of trees. Unbelievable!
Had a quick stop with a delicious pastry treat, and off to Alahambra.
Arrived in Granada, and proceeded up the hill to the walled complex of Alahambra. Another world UNESCO sight, this community contained the Royal palace of the Arab Sultan that live in southern Spain.
Our first stop was actually a structure the was built in the European Renaissance style following Spain’s reclamation of the rest of their country from the Arabs. Unfortunately the building was never completed, and lags the dome that was scheduled to cover it.
Next we started our tour of the Royal palace, which is the residence of the Royal family during the time of occupation of the Moors. Saw beautiful tiles, courtyards, fountains, and intricate plastering, as well as beautiful ceilings .
Following the tour of the palace, moved on to the gorgeous gardens. These lovely terraced gardens overlook the city and the old wall, and are filled with beautiful flowers, trees, bushes and even some artichokes! Of course there are pomegranates in all forms, be it trees or decorative bushes. In fact Granada means pomegranate.
Off through the gardens and through the Princess summer palace and to the restaurant for lunch. Once again had a tasty several course meal with wine, and even some entertainment!
Back to the city of Granada, our bags were in our room, so off to explore the town. However, fatigue and lack of open businesses due to it being Sunday, returned to the hotel. There we met up with some new friends for drinks. Off to an early bedtime, tomorrow brings the long drive to Valencia.
