Hello,
After leaving Isla Mujeres on Friday 31st. we hopped on one of their nice buses 3 hours down the coast to a place called Tulum. We´d had a recommendation for a hostel so we booked in advance with the owner. We stayed in amazing wooden palapas in the jungle! For breakfast they did something different everyday; we always had a lush fruit smoothie, tropical fresh fruit salad, and a main meal. One day the main bit was croissant with bacon, egg, refried beans and homemade salsa! We also had free use of bikes which was so good for exploring, getting to the beach and also saving a bit of money!
Most of our days consisted of going to the beach and/or town for lunch and dinner, and swimming and snorkelling in the sea. We also visited the famous Mayan ruins (see picture) which take about an hour to go round, and in the heat we were desperate to get into the sea! Today we went on a snorkelling tour, where they take you out to the barrier reef for a couple of hours, and it is the second biggest reef in the world after the great barrier reef in australia. It cost about 7 pounds each for everything, and we saw lots of colourful fish, but no turtles this time!
The food has been amazing, although until tonight we´ve eaten in the same restaurant for dinners! We´ve had some amazing fajitas, quesadlillas, enchilladas and tacos. Their salsas and chilli sauces (habinero chilli) are so tasty here, and it´s all really cheap. We´ve also tried the local margaritas which are gorgeous, although with all their cocktails they put half mixer to half spirit, which is always a good thing, and only about a pound each!
Tomorrow we´re heading down to the Mexico-Belize border to a town called Chetumal for the night before heading into Belize City and then Caye Caulker the next day. The buses are really nice here so the three or four hours shouldn´t be too bad. Caye Caulker is apparently another little tropical island with good snorkelling and swimming. After that are plans (at the moment) are to go from there across to Guatemala to see some cool lakes, mountains and ruins.
Hope you are all well and keep the messages coming,
Love Rose and Mike.xxx
