We were sad to leave Pandan island, we had some amazing dives and the island was beautiful but onwards and upwards. Our next stop and our final stop in the Philippines was a place called Puerto Galera, north of Mindoro. We thought this would be a pretty simple journey as it was on the main island across from Pandan which is set in the west of Mindoro. However we were told we would have to drive the other way round the island, anticlockwise, as roads didn't exist. Or the alternative was to catch a bus up the coast then a boat to Puerto Galera, we chose the later.
We were up nice and early (5.30 to be precise) to get a boat to the main land which out hotel kindly arranged for us. It was then a short journey to the 'local' bus stop. It really wasn't much of a bus stop, just a muddy patch of ground with a few chickens running round, walking past you never would have thought it was a bus station. Anyway we didn't have to wait long until our bus turned up, well what was left of it! It was a heap of junk, no windows, seats falling apart, holes in the floor, it was going to be a long four hours.
The bus took forever, we couldn't figure out why there were so many people working on the bus. There was the driver and ticket attendant and an extra person. It wasn't until we had out first breakfast stop that we realised his role....mechanic! Yes the bus was in that bad a condition it needed a mechanic on board.
We eventually made it to the port and got on the boat. It was pretty smooth and only took and hour. Once we found a hotel we went for a wonder, and were a little shocked at what we found.....pubs full of expats, and not your standard expats, these were sex tourists! It was pretty revolting, this place was the sleaziest place we had ever been! The place itself wasn't the prettiest but you only come here for one thing (sex trade aside) and that's diving. We went and spoke to loads of dive shops, non of them blew us away, they were either rude or charging extortionate prices. Anyway we found one called Blue Ribbon Divers, two English chaps would be taking us out for a couple of fun dives.
On our first dive it wasn't long before we encountered the blasted Trigger fish. This time there were two, our dive masters batted them away with there sticks but unfortunately one got away from them and headed straight towards us. Luckily it went for Frankies fin, but scared the hell out of her (Pete was nowhere to be seen). The second dive we were more lucky, no trigger fish, but we did see turtles, unicorn fish and a giant yellow puffer fish. We weren't going to do the final dive but changed out minds, we're to addicted. The last dive was a muck dive. This is where you dive where there in no coral just sand an it's where you get see some weird looking creatures. We weren't sure what to expect but we liked it, we saw some sea moths which are weird looking but quite pretty, we saw some nudibranch and our first sea horse. It was pretty cool to see all these things!
