We took a sweat box bus from the 4000 islands back to Pakse to catch a local bus to Tat Lo. The local bus was entertaining as ever, Kate ended up playing peak a boo for two hours with the girl sitting in front of her. We arrived and walked a couple of kilometres to the small village, by this time it was dark and you have to be very careful choosing a guesthouse in the dark. We found one that had huts out the back, our one was quite nice, it sat on stilts over a pond and had a shared bathroom. We had dinner in the hotel restaurant where Kate attracted another kitten. We then got an early night under our mozzi nets.
We were up relatively early and after a disappointing breakfast we headed to the first waterfall. It was very nice but not that impressive so we hiked upstream to the next one. This one was a little more secluded and we climbed over the rocks to sit at the edge of the pool. We had heard you could walk another 3.5 kilometres up to an even bigger one so we started our next trek. We kept coming to dead ends along the walk so we ended up turning round and abandoning it. As we walked back we neared the top of the second waterfall we had been too, we couldn't believe it was the same one. There was ten times as much water crashing down and the pool had risen by a couple of metres. The rocks we had be sitting on and the ones we climbed over were totally submerged, lucky we got out when we did. We found out that there is a dam further upstream and they open this in the evenings of the rainy season to let the excess water through. We weren't quite sure why they did this in the middle of the day in the dry season, if we had of still been sitting there we would of had to swim out if we weren't washed away.
We continued back down to the first waterfall which now looked amazing. Two thirds of it just looked like huge dry steps when we first saw it, but with the excess water these were covered. It was huge and water was pouring down it from all over the place. We stopped in a restaurant here for some lunch before walking back in to the village.
Tat Lo is a really small village in the Bokaven Plateau. This area sits in the south central part of Laos and has hundreds of water falls, the second thing it is well known for us coffee, it grows everywhere here.
Being such a small village there's not many choices when it comes to food but we found a place called Moma's. Moma is known for big portions for little money and it was much better than the more expensive food at our hotel, the portions were huge!
