Rohin goes around the world
Geez its been one hell of a week and what a way to end off my time in Canada and Whistler. I still havent managed to cut back the drinking and am becoming increasingly more comfortable with the fact that I may just be an Alcholic. Still im having a ball and have had some very fun nights out so why stop when your on a roll!!
But it hasent all been drinking and partying. My purpose for going to Whistler was to ride and thats exactly what Ive been doing alot of. On Monday I took Toms Santa Cruz DH bike and spent a day in the Whislter bike park. This is the worlds largest MTB park with about 40 differnt trails you can ride ranging from green to double black diamond in difficulty. I skipped all the green stuff and went straight to the blue runs. There were easy and soon I had the hand of the DH bike. Had a few issues with not being cliped in but I was getting there. I found I rode the technical trails well but the jumps and drops were just beyond me. I found I didnt have the commitment needed to do them. I met a guy Lenie on the chair lift and he offered to help me learn. Soon i was doing drop offs, rock face roll ins and starting to get some air on the jumps. It wasnt huge air as I was landing on the tops of all the jumps but I was feeling more confidant. We even did some Double black diamond runs, which to my surprise I handeled most of pretty well. Ill admit it, I walked a few things.
so come the end of day one in the park i was pretty happy with things.
That night was a going away party for Renee (toms flatmate). Sara (other flatmate) and I were meeting them there, but not before we knocked off a bottle of Bacardi to get us started. Well it worked, so well that I never got finished. It was a huge night was many random amusing and some not so amusing events that had me strolling home at about 9:30 the next day. Unfortunatly the weather went to the crapper so there was nothing better to do than sleep all day. The rain set in hard and riding was limited. I did get out with a friend to do the Kill me Thrill me trail and then a evening rain ride on the flank trial, but it was cold and dismal so partying at nights took over and sleeping during the days became the norm, again!
Come Friday and it finally stopped so it was time to do an epic I had heard about. I headed off to ride the Singing pass walking trail (strictly no bike allowed, but who was to know right) it was a 10km trail climb up a beautiful valley where the temp dropped from my start out of 16degs to finally a low of 3degs on one of the mountain passes. The ride ended up taking me about 3 hours with 3 mountain passes, 1 hour with it snowing and then a very fast descent back to the Village. It was a really nice ride that I hope to never forget. Amazing views, great trails, lots of hiking with the bike, what more could I want.
Friday night Tom, Andrew and I had an agreement from the week before that we would not drink, go to be early and spend all day Saturday in the DH park..... Hmm that was till Tom got hom announcing that it was to be a big one, producing a bottle of Bacardi and some shot glasses. It was the last night in the flat for those guys too so I had cooked a big meal for us all as the clean up started. So quite night it was not, but fun it certaintly was. Wake up at 9 soon turned into 11 and park by 10 became more like 1 but still enough time was spent in the DH park for me to properly learn how to jump!!! It was pretty costly to hire the bike and gear but im really glad I did it. I learnt alot that day and am proud to have done it. It was pretty cold though with snow on the ground at the top of the 2nd chair lift, so we spent more time playing in the jumps trails at the base.
So what to do with the last night in Whislter???? Oh I know why not drive to a house party some 30mins away and dance all night whilst getting blind drunk! This party was so big that even the police could tell us how to get there. The party was for no know reason and all were invited. There was a well known local DJ playing and approx 250 people having the times of their lives. Including the three of us. Andrew and I spent most of our night on the dance floor styling it up whilst Tom who was hardly seen but cant seem to recall himself where he was all night. Garden, Laundry, Kitchen, Deck, Bedroom, Who the hell knows but he was on the dance floor long enough for us to do the Canoo through the crowd. Imagine feeling something at your feet and looking down to see two guys padelling their way around the crowd, asses on ground, make belive paddles in tandom!!! There were some pretty funny comments made and its something ill remember for a long time. Not so sure if ill ever do it again, but maybe. Later just for good measure the three of us did the skydiver. We even managed to link up, do a spin and link up again. Very amusing.
so the sun came up and on no sleep it was off to breakfast and then my last ride in Whistler.
I was a bit rough to start with but after a good 2 hour climb I started to feel OK. Untill it started snowing again, then it was panic stations. I got too cold too quickly and had to get off the hill in fastest way I could. My feet were numb, hands hurting, face very cold and every rock, root and water bar on the trail was causing me issues. Soon enough though i got down off the hill warmed up enough to feel my extremities.
The drive home was a long one. We stopped for dinner first, where tom who had just said he didnt feel he needed beer just naturally ordered too for us. Thanks tom. Then after finishing the meal we both proceeded to fall asleep at the table, hmm good start to a 2 hr drive.
I soon woke ( have no idea how long we slept there for) and we got going. We did some driver swapping till finally I pulled up in a car park outside Burger king in Squarmish and went to sleep. About every 10 to 15mins Tom woke up screaming "where are we, are we OK" to which I told the same story each time as he fell back asleep and so did I. Rigth so 2 hour drive taking 4 hours, still better late and alive than never at all.
so its my last day here in Canada and its catch up day. Got to clean the bike, see a friend and then have one last bender with Tom. not much to do. But this arvo we are going on a tour of EA games biggest office in the world. We met this guy in the pub on monday night down here and his taking us on a tour. It should be interesting. Another Random Adventure!!
