Rohin goes around the world
This is for sure not the place to give up on your drinking. Im starting to get worried that I may end up with liver damage but when there is so much partying to go to, what does one do? Ok so I could say no but thats never been my way.
You would think that if you are going to a cross country race, your pretty sure to not be having to big of a night after it.... WRONG this is Whistler. I now attended 2 of the local mtb club thrusday night races and both of them have been pretty big nights.
These races are called Loonie races and cost just $2 to enter. You have to be a member to do them so im now a member of the WORCA club. The races start at 6pm on thrusday evenings and the location and course is differnt each time. Last weeks race had a huge amount of bike hiking as we slogged it up a hill before some knarly descent down to the finish and then onto that races sponsor, Boston Pizza for pretty much unlimited beer and pizza.
Last nigth was the last race of the year. It started at Function Junction which is 10kms from Whistler with a heap of nice trails in the area. The course was fun and fast with a few good climbs. I had a pretty good race and ended in 5th, which I was happy with. I was on the wheel of 3rd at the top of the last big climb but these guys descend like demons so staying with them was just not going to happen. Plus they know the trails so they had that over me too.
After the race it was onto a local garage that was decked out for the evening with a pile of kegs, dinner and a live band. It seemed everybody else was more prepared for this evening than me as I had a jacket to put on and stay warm but still had to stay in the lycra with leg warmers. Gee didnt I look spesh on the dance floor. Everybody else had a full change of clothes. Still when it came to the end of the night at least I was in the right riding atire.
Many many beers were had and the party was rocking, but them came the job of getting the 10kms home with no lights. I headed off with this guy Jarome and his mate cos jarome had a light but come 5 mins into a trial that kept us off the main highway his light went flat and left us with one hell of a night time off road adventure to get home. Still a few little falls, a ride in the back of a ute and then some more mad cycling adventures and I was home. Suppose the good thing is the ride helped to sober me up. Feel great today!
So its the day before race day of the Chekamus Challenge. Its about a 70kms course from Squarmish to Whistler that ends with a pretty nice 30kms of single track that includes some log rides, rock face descents and even the odd teter toter (see saw your ride over) Hope to to be on some ones wheel at those ones! (if you can only go one at a time or the 2nd guy runs into the back of the teter totoer when its up, not pretty ill assure you). Im feeling pretty good about it all but ive got my annoying knee niggle back after 3 solid days of riding early in the week. Must have not stretch so well. Sort of hard to get good stretching in as the floor of the place im staying at hasnt been vacumed in over 6 months. Ive tried sweeping it but with carpet its just not working. Oh well im sure the knee will come good.
Im also sure sat night will be a big one, but sunday im hiring a DH bike and the gear and going to see what all the fuss is about in the bike park. Now thats going to be fun!
