Day 11: starting in the hills between Healesville and Marysville we decided to head to Marysville to see what it had to offer, before heading back to the Yarra Valley wineries.
Marysville was pretty much totally destroyed by a bush fire in 2009, so is a big construction site with homes still being rebuilt. Evidence of the fires is all around with the burnt remains of the forest. Despite this the town is really nice, and the surroundings are stunning. We ventured up to Steavensons falls, a pretty cascade of waterfalls in the forest.
Onwards back to the Yarra Valley. We spotted the White Rabbit brewery on the way into Healesville, and thought it would be rude not to have a look as its a nice brew. We didn't stay for a drink, partly because we were going wine tasting, and had to drive, partly because there was a deep discussion of brewing techniques going on at the bar which we didn't want to interrupt.
Next stop Tarra Warra winery in the Yarra Valley (try saying that when you've had the wine). Treated ourselves to a gourmet lunch in the fancy restaurant - making up for the fact that on valentines day we had burnt sausages for tea! Lunch was delightful topped off with a tipple of the award winning 2008 reserve Chardonnay.
Finishing lunch we did a quick sampling of the range of wines from the estate, and came out with a case for later - seemed rude not to.
Next, and although meaning we'd be doubling back on ourselves we decided we couldn't visit Melbourne without going to the Phillip Island Penguin Parade, so off we headed south.
We arrived and had a little time to kill before the Penguins would return at 8.30pm, so we headed down to nearby Nobbies Point. Her we got our first sight of a Little Penguin, as the smallest breed of Penguin they stand only 1 foot tall. Many were out of their burrows cooling down as it was a hot afternoon. Nobbies also has an immense seal colony, we couldn't get a good view as they we some way off shore, but with our binoculars we could make out lots of seal shaped lumps.
On to the evenings entertainment, the Penguin Parade. Basically we sat on seats built on the dunes watching the Little Penguins arrive home, then cross the beach to walk up to their burrows. They arrived in 2s and 3s, gathering together to make the dash across the beach to the safety of the dunes. Very cute watching them waddle across. After watching them cross the beach we were sale to see them closer as the path back to the visitor centre crossed the dunes on raised boardwalks, with the Luttle Penguins walking underneath, often you could just hear them calling each other before appearing out of a bush or from under the walkway you were stood on. All very cute.
Too late back at camp to start our wine collection. Maybe at our next stop.
