Hey Everyone!
Finally made in to San Francisco after our delayed flight. Turned out we were delayed for nearly two hours due to bad weather conditions. When they say it's foggy in San Francisco - they really mean it!
Very cool plane when we eventually got on it, one of the new Virgin America fleet planes. Tim described it as an ipod plane - cool seats and they even had tv's for a like hour flight which was nice. All the lights above were purple too.
Got to our hostel - USA Hostels- voted the best in the North America, so we were feeling hopeful. Turns out the hostel was really great - had everything you needed - even charger points in lockers - which no other hostel has had the whole time we've been away. Met the two Aussie girls in our room and then went off for some Thai food down the road.
Got up early the next day and attempted to make some of the free pancakes on offer - failed miserably and we had one between us.. didn't help we got there late and so there was no mixture left :( boo! Decided to walk 'it' off and head over to Fisherman's Wharf... which would have been lovely had we not gone over 'Nob hill'. This big hill (one of many) in San Fran where up and down are both practically vertical.. even the cars struggle to get up. Walked around and explored the area and the shops.
Valentines day... we went to see Valentines Day <3
We took the boat over to Alcatraz. We did an audio tour of the cellhouse which was really good. Learnt all about the famous inmates, the daily routines and the punishments in isolation on Block D. Saw some great views of San Francisco.. at least it wasn't too foggy. We learnt about the attempted escapes and the actually escapes that led to the prison being closed for good. We thought it probably seemed like a good idea back in the day, as Alcatraz is its own little Island, but its not actually that far from the coast at all. The cells were so tiny and the whole prison was really cold and draughty. Would not have been a good place to stay. There was a lot of accommodation on the Island aswell as the wardens, cooks etc tended to live there as it was cheaper.
And that was it really... we found San Francisco to be a bit.. of a dive. Went shopping in Union Square one day and on the way there we ventured down a new road.. and it looked like some gangster scene from a movie! No joke! Guys were lined up by the cars all staring us out, Tim was convinced some were 'packing'. the shops were all shut on the street, half dressed girls were walking around. hehe. All the streets have so many homeless people on. We concluded it's not the nicest place we've been.
Had a fun few days though :)
That's it for now Blogfans!!
Love us xx
