Pretty uneventful night last night. We watched “Don’t Look Up” on Netflix and went to bed. Unfortunately, Manchester City had the early game (6:30 am in MPLS, 4:30am here) so I watched most of that (it was worth it as they won 2-1). Our morning adventure was a kayaking tour in the ocean and it was an adventure! It was a king tide this morning so the waves were pretty big. It took us a couple tries and one capsize each (Ellie and I were in one kayak, Luke and Amy were in the other) to get over the waves to the calmer water. Once we were out there the guides told us about the caves, kelp, and local geography. Being out on the ocean was cool, but a little cold for some of us (Amy and Ellie). The guides saved the best for last, as we had to “surf” through the waves back to shore when our tour was over. Ellie and I made it without capsizing, Luke and Amy did not.
We headed back to apartment and took some hot showers and ate lunch. Once we were sufficiently warmed up and full we walked back to the sea lion area to check out a cave. About 120 years ago a guy bought a house on the cliff over looking the ocean and then tunneled down to one of the caves on the water. During prohibition it was used to smuggle booze into San Diego. Now it is a tourist destination. Ellie, Luke, and I checked it out. After the caves we walked south past the sea lions to where the seals hung out. The seals were not nearly as interesting as the sea lions. They just slept, but we’re still fun to see.
It was getting late so we walked back to the apartment and drove up to the top of Mt. Soledad where there is a Veterans memorial that offered great views. We also caught the sun setting.
We ended the evening at a great local restaurant.
