I flew into the Gonkar airport from Shanghai and did not have to show my Tibetan visa to anyone which was weird. We were told that you had to buy a visa before you could enter Tibet but this was not really a problem, I had meet some travellers who did not even have a visa.
I had to go as part of a tour group, but the group consited of just me so I was picked up by a lady and her driver and taken to my hotel, and thats the last I saw of her, so much for the tour group and guide you had to have, evedentially you didnt!
The drive from the airport to Lasha was really stunning and the mountains along with the blue water running alongside it was really beatiful. Tibet is over 3,500 meters high and you can really notice it with the altitude, and I would often get short of breath and a bit dizzy from time to time but this was only for the first few days.
The first thing I did was take a stroll around the city and to the Barkhor streets where hundreds of people are preying around the Jokhang temple moving around the streets in the same direction. In Tibet thousands of Tibetans go to Lhasa each year to prey and seeing it is quite impressive, the way they prey is that they walk for a few meters then put there knees on the floor and slide there hands forward to prey then they get up and repeat the process again. They would do this for hours and it was quite impressive to watch there dedication.
I visted a number of temples and monstrys. The Jakhong monestry was really intersting and provided some great views of the city. The artictacture was facinating as well and it had a really relaxed atmosphere about it as well.
The monestrys were the highlight for me. The first monestry was Deprung monestry which was absoultley amazing, no tourists and was really peacful to walk around. The view from the monestry were amazing as well and overall you knew you were somewhere special. The second monestry I visited was Sera monestry which was good but not as good as the Deprung monestry and I wished that I visted them the other way around.
One of the last things I did was to visit the Potala place because I could not get a ticket until the last day. From the outside the place is huge mainly because it is located on a hill and it makes buckingham place looks tiny in comparision. The temple is amazing and absoultley beatiful to look at. I walked trhough the palace which was impressive but not as impressive as the Deprung monestry. The palace had a number of rooms with shrines and statues everywhere with step stairways and narrow corridors.
The food in Tibet was also good, you could get anything western through to Yak the Tibetan meat that they eat, which is pretty good.
