Living The Dream
Having spent the last two weeks in Buenos Aires (aka the best city in the world), yesterday my two Danish friends and I got a fast ferry over to Uruguay. We arrived in the old smugglers port town of Colonia Del Sacramento and checked into the local HI hostel.
Today we strolled down to the riverfront for an expensive and tasteless burger and chips. First impressions of Uruguay are not good. Contrary to reports in the Lonely Planet, the people seem miserable and the food is poor especially considering its high cost compared to Argentina.
Having said that, Colonia is a charming town with cobbled streets and pavement cafes. One of the first things I noticed about the place is that there are no traffic lights! Upon discovering this we had no choice but to hire out a golf buggy and a quad bike and start burning it around the town! The golf buggy had the pace of a snail but turned on a sixpence so was perfect for those last minute u-turns! The quad bike was simply awesome. It was so fast and the breaks combined with its lightweight chasis made the perfect combination for wheelies, endoes etc. Clarkson would have had a field day! All in all, we had a lot of fun, in fact, so much fun that we were involved in a minor rta! I sped off on the quad bike and slammed on the breaks right in front of Stefan in his golf buggy! I insist that, in the eyes of he law, it was his fault cos he hit the back of me! However, I am also willing to admit that the breaks he had were not as good as the ones on the quad! Stefan also had no drivers licence so I think I win! The funniest part of the day was when Stefan, fearing the dreaded licence check, hit the breaks because a policeman came by on a bike. The policeman just cruised by and waved at us! Perfect.
After a day of madness in Colonia, this evening we hopped on a bus to the capital, Montevideo. We are staying at a place called Red Hostel - its plush, newly decorated with a roof terrace avec hammocks! Cant wait to see the city and hopefully get a smile from the locals!
