Living The Dream
Hola, thank you to everyone who sent birthday wishes for yesterday. I am now 24 years old! It must be nearly time to get a job, move out and find a girlfriend! My birthday was full of mixed fortunes. I spent it in a desert oasis called Huacachina. Its a tiny place set around a man-made lagoon which is surrounded by huge sand dunes covering roughly the same area as London. I woke up at around 10am and had a continental breakfast at the pool bar in my hostel. During the day, I went on a sand buggy ride which was awesome! Much like being on a rollercoaster only it lasted 2 hours. We drove up to the top of sand dunes, lipped over the edge and raced down some near-verticle drops. Every now and then the driver would stop and hand over a sandboard so that we could take the dunes at our own leisure. The main misfortune of the day was that sand got into my camera which means that I have NO PHOTOS OF ME ON MY BIRTHDAY. I will now have to try and get the camera stolen so I can claim on insurance!
After sandboarding I went back for a refreshing shower before lunch and birthday beers back at the hostel. Then I went to catch a bus to Lima where I would transit for the northern city of Trujillo. The bus station was private to the company I was travelling with so the employees were expecting me at around 4pm. I strolled up 15 minutes early only to be hastened along by one of the staff. I made a dash for the bus station which was situated at the other side of the road. I managed to trip over an iron fence which was seperating the pavement from the road! Somehow I landed on my head before toppling head-over-heels! I got up to find that both my flip-flops had fallen off and that some of the contents of my bag were strewn across the road! I got up and rearranged my composure before limping onto the bus which was EARLY! I have a few bruises which I had trouble explaining to the kind hostess. She took a liking to me and even sat next to me and chatted on the road to Lima. I stopped in Lima for 2 hours where I outwhitted another cheating taxi driver who tried to take me to a Pizza Hut on the other side of the city when there was one in walking distance. I spotted the closer one and told him to take me there. He asked for 6 soles which was twice as much as it should have been as a maximum rip-off! I managed to argue him down to 4 soles before eating birthday pizza and more beer. I then boarded a luxury bus for the overnight ride to Trujillo.
Next destination, Huanchaco.
