Living The Dream
Hello everyone!
Finally, I have found time to write about my travels so far!
I arrived in Rio a bit late as my plane from Madrid to Rio was delayed overnight and then further delayed in the morning when we had to abort take off due to a computer failure on the plane!
In Rio I stayed in a great hostel right on the Copacabana beach. There was a great bar in the hostel and I met some good people. I went to visit Corcovado which is the Christ Statue that dwarfs the city. I also went to Sugar Loaf Mountain which involves two pants-browning cable car rides. I visited a massive flea market in the Uruguaiana part of the city, accidently went to a live s*x show which us gringos thought was just a nightclub, visited Rocinha which is the largest of Rio's 600 favelas (I'm going to write an article on my experience here and get it published). On my last day in Rio I went to Maracana to watch Flamengo get beaten by Romario's Vasco Da Gama. The atmosphere was amazing, the football was good and the game finished in the 88th minute with a mass riot which made the front page of every tabloid in Brazil! The players were fighting, the police and the army were spraying tear gas in the face of the players and the media conducted interviews on the pitch before the game recommenced for the final two minutes. As expected, the final whistle was the signal for the Flamengo players to chase the ref off the pitch! One player, Renato, jumped over the advertising boards and started kicking the ref! Its safe to say that Brazilians are passionate people! Both sets of fans met outside for the apres match brawl which I was only too happy to avoid!
To celebrate our last night in Rio, about 20 of us from the hostel went to a favela funk party in another favela - The nightclub we went to was used to film a shooting scene in the movie 'City Of God'.
Rio is a fantastic emersion of sea, sand, mountains and unrivalled culture. The people are passionate and, if you keep your nose clean, trouble won't find you. I would say that it is the most beautiful city I have ever seen. I was very sad to leave.
Next, Ihla Grande, a tropical island which you can only reach by boat!
