The coach provider from Hue to Hoi An offered to pick me up from the hotel, bargain me thinks. There's a snag here though, because when the bus turned up I was the last one to get on, and as such got the worst seat, shoved at the back underneath the top bunks with no air con. I say it was the worst seat, that was until the spare driver rocks up and shifts me over so that he can stretch out for a snooze, leaving me in the phoetus position for the duration of the journey. Note to self, always go to where the bus is setting off and don't bother with the pick up service!!! Luckily it was only a 4 hour journey.
Anyway Hoi An has a great beach and is catered for both traveller and holiday maker. It's also the main place where you get the custom fitted suits made up as there is a tailor every 5 yards. I needed to get a couple done as I'd given most of mine to charity shops in the great clearout but it can be a complicated process if you don't really know exactly what you want e.g. 3 pocket, straight pocket, pleat trouser etc. etc. etc. In the end I looked up a highly recommended tailor on the net, downloaded a couple of pictures of 007 (Daniel Craig not Roger Moore!), went in there, picked the fabric and said can you make me two of those and I'm not paying unless I look like that guy. It worked a treat!
I spent quite a few days on the beach with Jouk, a dutch guy I'd met in Hue whilst crying into his beer after the Nederlands got knocked out of the European Championships. At least they got there. There's not too much in the way of tourist attractions so we hired a moped each and went 30km to visit My Son which is the ancient Hindu site and spiritual heart of the Kingdom of Champa. It was quite nice and the mopeds were good fun.
In Vietnam, most things close down around 11pm, probably because everyone is up by around 5am. So you have to find the late night places. In Hoi An this was the King Kong bar. I went there the first night and was still playing pool at 6am in the morning. It's a mad kind of a place that you get the moped taxis to take you to when everything else closes.
Hoi An was cool and I ended up staying for 5 nights. It was longer than I'd intended but I did have to have a couple of fittings for the James Bond suits so that's how I justify it! I'll need to be a bit more disciplined in Nha Trang so that I have a few days in Ho Chi Minh (Saigon).
