After leaving Ko Phangan, I flew to Bangkok for a couple of days to work out where exactly I was going to head next. So after thumbing through th the Lonely Planet I plucked for a trip upto Khao Yai National park where I'd sign up for some trekking and hopefully see some wildlife. May be the a cheeky monkey here or there, and catch a sight of some elephants roaming free.
Now don't get me wrong it's a nice enough place, but the problem with it is that it covers an area of 2165 sq km. Our little tour party of 7 would have needed Crocodile Dundee himself as a tour guide to find any animals in this place. We saw the odd little snake, a scorpion, and a rather large reptile thing, but that was about it. After a couple of hours trekking on foot we drove around in a truck to a couple of waterfalls (one of which was in the Beach, I know don't fall of your chair!), and ended the day with a 45 minutes to the top of the mountain for a view of the park. I've seen quite a few decent views already on this trip so it was all a bit underwelming!
On the drive back to the guesthouse it was getting dark and this is when everyone comes out to play. Everyone got a bit excited when we stopped to see some monkeys, but it was so dark by this stage you could only see the rustling trees and a few sounds that I'm assured were the monkeys we were looking for.
Ah well you can't win them all. The plan is to to head to Chiang Mai and Pai next.
