I thought that I would be a tourist today and visit Jim Thompson's House, a big attraction in Bangkok.
His house, or more specifically, his six linked houses are made in the style of traditional Thai village houses. Originally built in 1959, the area is now dwarfed by high rise buildings but it provides a little oasis in amongst the concrete jungle of the city.
Jim Thompson was an American who settled in Thailand after WW2 and began to export silk garments to New York etc. As an architect, he designed the linked houses and brought many artifacts from different parts of the country.
One aspect which I liked was the little spirit house built out of the shadows of the main dwelling , which protects the property and people from bad spirits.
He disappeared whilst in the Cameron Highlands in Malaysia in 1967 and so only lived here for a short period of time. One of his sisters was later murdered in New York and so there is still mystery about his family's lifestyle.
I took the the skytrain to get here and back. It is a fast and efficient way of travelling around Bangkok. You get great views of the city below and beyond and I couldn't help thinking that maybe Yangon will have something similar in the next few decades.
