India and Nepal 2022
This afternoon, Rup took me to see two very old towns in the Kathmandu valley called Bungawati and Khokana. They are well over 600 years old and provide a fascinating insight into life back then because in many ways, little has changed. The old narrow streets have houses with small doors and ornate carved windows and the washing is set out to dry. Goats, cockerels, and other animals wander freely along the streets. In Bungawati, there is a 'village square' with a temple, which is a mixture of both Hindu and Buddhist traditions. The people here are from the Newari caste, which is the same ethnic group as Rup. In Nepal, there are over 120 ethnic groups and over 90 languages too. At Khokana, the older people gather to play cards, sit and talk, or weave yarn. The younger generation dress in more western clothes, have mobile phones and hang out playing music. Its a glimpse into a way of life which disappeared in the UK a few generations ago and being the only visitor this afternoon from overseas was a a real special privilege. Photos to follow
