India and Nepal 2022
At midday, I hired a rickshaw driver for a couple of hours who took me around all the sights of Fort Kochi. We passed many churches and temples, old colonial houses and streets. Two particular places of interest were the local laundry where all the washing is done by hand, including my own today! It is then hung out to dry in the warm sun and finally ironed using old heavy implements. The other place I enjoyed seeing was the spice market still using the same building as when it opened in the early 1600s. I also visited the old Jewish quarter including a very old synagogue - now only seven Jewish people live in the town. Joseph, my rickshaw driver dropped me off at the jetty and I travelled over to the other side of the harbour - a cost of 7pence! I passed luxury cruise liners, naval vessels and big tankers in what is becoming a major maritime port for India. There are a huge number of high rise buildings all along the harbour. Tonight I went to a fantastic display of traditional Keralan theatre in the Kathakali style. The first hour or so is seeing the actors being made up, then a demonstration of the great skills of the performers followed by the play itself. Great night.
