Have arrived in Capetown and it's such a lovely city. The weather is beautiful and warm and the hostel I'm staying in is at the foot of Table Mountain and has the best views. Think I'll chill out here for a few days before moving further along the cape as there seems loads to do. I've just seen an advert for cage diving with great white sharks so I may have to have a closer look........
Capetown is a cool city. Have done most of the touristy stuff now including a trip to the Cape Penninsula which is stunning (see photos) and climbing Table Mountain.
Reluctantly I had to leave Capetown and start travelling around the Western Cape with another Manc, a German and an Aussie. Our first stop was in a small place called Oudtshoorn which is famous for it's caves and ostrich farms. Caving was fun but definitely not for the claustraphobic. Ostriches are the scariest things I've encountered so far but the ostrich farm was pretty cool. They let you ride the ostriches but I was told I was a little heavy. A few less pies next time!
After a night in Port Elizabeth we finally arrived in Cintsa, a really small beach resort, for a couple of days to chill out. The beach was fantastic and the backpackers we stayed in was pretty lively and had great views. After a drunken bet the night before I agreed to try my hand a horseriding and promptly fell off! What do you expect with no tuition!
It feels like I'm travelling far too quickly to fully experience everything South Africa has to offer but I've really enjoyed it here. Definitely worth another visit.
After Cintsa I moved up through Durban to St Lucia where there are many game reserves and national parks. Unfortunately, it rained the whole three days I was there so activities were limited to a couple of early morning walks through the wetlands where we saw loads of antilope, zebras, hippo and a couple of crocodiles.
Typically, St Lucia brightened up just as I left but I had to quickly get round to Nelspruit on the outskirts of the Kruger National Park to pick up my safari.
Being out in the game park was an unbelievable experience and very surreal at times. We stayed in tents and our camp was on the bank of a dried up river. From the very first day we saw loads of animals up close including giraffes, elephants, various types of antilope, hippos, buffalo, warthogs, wildebeast, white rhino and even a hyena one night when it wandered into the camp. Unfortunately we didn't get to see lions or leopards but we did hear them in the distance at night.
The two highlights of the trip were tracking a white rhino on foot and occasionally getting close before it bolted, and being charged by an angry bull elephant while on a night drive. However, having an elephant pulling up trees to eat the roots, only 10 metres from my tent one night was a close second.
Am now in Pretoria for a few days as I have some time to kill before my flight to Hong Kong on Saturday.
