Driving back to Edinburgh,Scotland from Dundee I noted a brown tourist sign reading Nockhill Racing Circuit.
I had been m past it in 2015 as people headed to a round of the Scottish Road Race Championships but as I had to be in the South of England that day time did not a visit.
I thought why not but then the sign was well pass. Then a new one said Nockhill 6miles (10km) so why not overcame speed and i turned off the motorway in the hope that just maybe the gate would be open or a hill nearby to see the track in the distance.
The road in was very well signposted every turn had a signpost telling me which way to turn or not to turn.
The track came into view and it seemed busy! Cars were going around the track, the car park had many cars, people walked every where.
I parked and walked into the track office and asked what was available any driving or riding experiences. No can't offer anything as the whole complex has been hired today by Supercars UK Ltd. You could go down to the media centre and see if they may have any vacancies, but most people booked at Christmas (8 months ago).
I strode briskly down and asked Any Vacancies? The lady at the desk said your booking sheet please. Had I misunderstood I said what booking sheet?.
She indicated the table in the centre which only had blank booking sheets. I grabbed one wrote my name, licence number and next of kin, then signed it and returned to the same lady. She looked and asked "You need to nominate the vehicle?"What vehicle I asked, well any of our stable bar the McLaren which is out of service"
I wrote the new BMW I8 in space one and the Aston Martin in space 2 and asked when. She looked at the clock and said ,"" briefing in 25minutes.
20minutes later i was seated in the briefing room and subsequently heard the WH&S speech, basic racing rules, what the flags mean etc etc.
When he had finished he asked änyone prepared to take a risk today put your hand up"
I was seated in the front row and my hand out reached any other. Step up Sir and lift the sheet covering the easel.
I did and immediately saw a photo of a Lambgorini Hurrance in lime green.
He asked would you like to drive it?
Immediately after that we got our onboard MicroSD card and drivers passport and huried down to pit lane where I managed to grab No 1 spot in the white BMW with Hamish my Instructor. The motor ignited with no noise a funny supercar experience as it is a hybrid. The track is tricky with the addition of two chicanes to "slow"novices down and a very tight 180o bend leading onto the main staight. Never the less the BMW proved to be a very poweful car as both the electric and mechanical engines came into play under hard acceleration, which is the reason one drives high performance cars afterall.
A short wait and I was in the Aston Martin and again trackling the technical nature of this track while juggling a V10 at high speed.
The track had one more challenge yet, a lime green supersports, awaiting me. This was true supercar driving as the exhaust note growled on take off but howled down the main straight as I settled into absolutely enjoying the performance so much so that the instructor ceased to yell brakes, brakes as we approached the chicanes but became more relaxed and offered a gentle power off, hard acceleration advice.
All too soon we were sitting in pit lane as he gave a formal assessment.
"Can I ask do you ride motorcycles?""Yes why", I replied. "Well now I know why you left braking so late",he said so I"guess you will be happy with a 160 down the straight?"Me only 160?"Sir this is the UK we talk MPH so I put it this way 260km then"

Greg Lane Kerrie and I visited Knockhill in 2007 for the British Superbikes and sat right on the hairpin bend leading uphill to the finish line. A great track. Did Merrilyn go in the cars?
Christopher Yes know that spot well, I hadn't been to the track before this visit. Merrilyn after lunch had the choice of sitting in the car overlooking the track or walk about 20m to the seats. No unfortunately she didn't tell me until we were leaving the track that she wished she had driven one of the car after seeing how slow some people were going!
