We are actually in Budapest, but I want to tell you about last Wednsday in PRAGUE. We felt very smug to be able to sail through the town on a city bus - the sun glittering off the gold Baroque trim of the buildings and the Nouveau artistic buildings almost smiling. We learned one can rent a. 3 bedroom apartment in Old Town for about a th ours and dollars a month, but most people only make about 20 thou a year, so it pulls be expensive. Jerry noticed there are hardly any traffic lights - cars stop for pedestrians only. Trams ( which we would call trolleys with tracks and electrical wire above,) do not stop, so we had to watch for them.
We found a wonderful leather store where Jerry got a zippered wallet he had been looking for a long time.
Then off to the Jewish area. There is only one synagogue holding services. All the others are museums. It was so very sobering and sad to see all the names of Holocaust victims written in small letters on the walls of several room. First was the family name, the the individual's followed by birth date and date last known to be alive. In one room were drawing by children in one of the camps. Many we're dark, but others ( like Anne Frank) were full of hope and bright colors.
Of the over 120,000 Jews living here in 1939, only 10,000 survived to see liberation
We learned that in the 12th century the Pope declared Jews and Christians should not live together . They were forced to wear yellow badges ( Hitler wasn't an original thinker) and live in a small area of the city which became known as the ghetto. In Prague at one time only the eldest son was able to be married. The graveyard, because of the small area and the belief that a buried person should not be moved, is layered deep with bodies. The tomb stone have weathered and toppled on one another. A memorial garden seems like an idea whose day has come.
Isn't it strange that Jesus, a Jew who taught love and forgiveness, should become associated with such an exclusive religion!!!
From there we found the fine restaurant Cathy had recommended , had a nice lunch and I went downstairs to the restroom - far from the music filled restaurant. I didn't notice until I was ready to come out of the cubicle that there was no handle on the inside. I was trapped - the door went from floor to sealing !! I pounded with my hands and called " Help! " a few times - no answer - then the automatic lights wen off!!! I grabbed the toilet brush and pounded in earnest with the handle - wondering how long Jerry would take to send help - pretty soon our waitress came down and rescued me! We have laughed and laughed and Jerry always welcomes me back each time I return from the restroom
We walked and walked and then took the Metro back going down two escalators and some steps - very quick and efficient.
A most adventuresome day!.
