Keeping my fingers crossed I can get this uploaded...
St Vitus is a magnificent cathedral- over 400 yards (4football fields) long. Begun in 1344 and completed in 1929 for the 1,000 anniversary of St Wenceslas ( of the Christmas carol) death. The only thing I knew about St Vitus was the St Vitus dance. When I asked, our guide told me that he lived in the 4 th century and was enthusiastic about converting the Czechs to Christianity. His attempts weren't welcome and the pagans put him in a vat of boiling oil causing him to have seizures and thus dance - I wished I hadn't asked!
There is one brilliant window that isn't stain glass. It is painted by Mucha, a famous Czech artist. Hope to go to his museum today.
A black car was driving through the outside area. Our guide thought it was the president coming to work. His life was threaten last Friday by a 26 year old fellow welding a toy plastic gun in protest. Of course no harm was done and the guy wasn't apprehended.... There will be an election of a new president by the parliament, not the people this January.
From the area around the castle you can see the red roofs of embassies, one of which Shirley Temple Black inhabited. Madelyn Albright lived in Prague until she was 14 when her family moved to escape the Naxis.
There is a statue of a fellow with a halo of 5 stars. He is also on the Charles Bridge. His name is John of Nepomuk. The queen would confess her sins to him and when the king wanted to know what she had said, John would not tell him, so the king had him tortured and he died a martyr for his queen.
There are 100 churches in Prague - 70 being Roman Catholic. We were told about 4o% attend regularly. There are some Hussite churches named for Jan Hus (1369-1415) who , like Luther a hundred years later, was a college professor and priest , promoted local religious autonomy, helped establish their national languages , was very popular and got in trouble with Rome. Hus was burned, Luther because of the printing press was able to be more successful.
We saw a building from which 2 Catholic Hapsburg were thrown out the window by a crowd of Protestants in 1618' thus beginning the 30 Years War. The Hapburgs landed in a pile of manure and only suffered broken arms - plus humiliation!!
