Colleen & Tom's Explorations
After a slightly disturbed night we got up early, had breakfast at the Pyramid Cafe and then met our bus at the southern entrance to the Luxor.
The bus took us out to the airport where we boarded a 19-seat aeroplane for our trip to the Grand Canyon airport. The flight took a long time as we detoured low over Lake Mead and the Hoover Dam as well as the Grand Canyon. We also flew over the Mojave desert. The top of the Grand Canyon is 7,000 ft above sea level (as high as Mt Kosciusko), and the bottom is 2,000 ft above sea level. It is desert at the bottom (up to 40 degrees celcius in summer) and cold at the top. There is a 2 year waiting list to go white water rafting on the Colorado river. From the airport we were met and put on a bus for our ride out to the Canyon. We visited two points of the rim: Yavapai Point and Mather Point. The Canyon was spectacular, the squirrels cut and many photos were taken. We were then take back to Tusayan (the village) where we had a buffet lunch at the Best Western Hotel. This was following by a screening of a movie about the Grand Canyon in the IMAX Theatre.
When we returned to Las Vegas we had dinner at the Manhattan Buffet at the Luxor, did a guided tour of King Tut's tomb (a replica of the original) and then caught a cab up to the Mirage so we could walk along the hotel strip, watching the volcano eruption at the Mirage, and the pirate Battle at Treasure Island. We played $5 on the pokies for 35 minutes and then gave the girls $10 each!!!
