Colleen & Tom's Explorations
We docked before breakfast this morning. I was woken during the night by a strong smell of smoke - apparently they like to burn their forests in Malaysia. The port area was covered in smoke and haze all day. We had a lovely brekkie down in the dining room on the buffet level, and continued on to trivia in the schooner bar. The trivia girl is 18 and from Newcastle. After trivia we decided to go ashore to check out the cruise centre (miles from nowhere). The free wifi didn't work and the convenience store was crowded, so we returned to the ship and read in our cabin, watching the passing shipping traffic. We went up to the Windjammer for lunch and then returned to our cabin for more relaxation. We went down to dinner, and the kitchen staff/wait staff danced through the restaurant, interrupting our meal for the third time this week, telling us all how hard they work, and what a difficult job they have. The restaurant staff were slimingly nice, telling us to tell all our friends how good they are. The food: a little odd. All of the chefs have Asian heritage, particularly Indonesian and Indian. There was always at least one curry on the menu; Veal Scaloppini was done as Chicken Scallopini, Veal Oscar was done as Pork Scaloppini Oscar; lobster, viewed as a delicacy by most Australians was dished up as a singular luncheon meat; tiramisu served as a slice. There were next to no veggies on most main courses in the dining room. It's like they have no idea of western culinary culture. And soup spoons to eat soup with PLEASE! After dinner we went to the show in the theatre. It was an a cappella group that were very clever - one of their numbers used the tunes of seven different John Williams movie themes with various snippets of dialogue from Star Wars. Awesome! A lot of people wearing sundresses and thongs found the performance not to their liking and walked out. The passengers: I'm a snob. I can't appreciate people who wear hats/thongs/singlets in restaurants; use outside voices no matter where they are; people who wander the ship in their singlets with their stubbies in their hands; who yell out to their friends across the restaurant, or the theatre. Don't get me wrong - we have also met some wonderful people, kind, generous with their friendship, people we can relate to, but they do stand out like specs of gold in a muddy alluvial stream!!
