4th day now in Phnom Penh. It really is very poor - went down streets today full of rubbish everywhere, and thousands of people are working and living there.
I moved house 2 days ago from the riverside to the lakeside which is far cheaper. Its a massive lake surrounded by shantytown-style shacks with a small backpacker area at one part of it.
Today was pretty eventful. I got a Tuk Tuk with 2 Kiwi girls I met. First we went to the shooting range and got to shoot an AK47. Its in a army base and was fecking excellent!
From there we went the citys refuge dump - we heard of this by chance from an aussie guy who knows someones who doing charity work there. They are actually dozens of children living on and off the dump. Its the worst thing of poverty Ive ever seen. They chase dump trucks arriving and pick out any scraps they think is worthful to them.
Some of them have never left the dump since birth. I didnt get that far into it with horendous smell. All the kids were following us. They have a charity based school on the edge of the dump. We visited that for about 30 mins. The kids are great, they know really good english and everyone of them are smilling and laughing. I showed them photos of various things on my travels - they really wanted to engage in conversation with you and have a bit of fun. I showed them a photo of Emma and Finn( me mum's golden retriever) - they couldnt get over it lol - Finn that is not Emma!
The Kiwi girls were playing games with the young girls and I got some good photos. These kids seriously need help. The best thing about was they didnt even ask us for money or anything once, they just wanted attention.
After that we went to the Killing Fields, the genocide mass grave site, were thousands of skulls are on display.
I think I'll be another day or 2 in Phnom Penn cause the Aussie fella is taking me to the local orphanage to see the kids. Were gonna bring them some toys.
