Was a steamy day when I left Oudtshoorn for the Wild coast. Was weird being on the Bazbus again and seeing the same stops along the way after a long time no see.. Had been more than a year since the last time on that road, fun enough there was still a driver who remembered me (and who I remembered). Getting to Mthatha was a relief on a hot day, gets pretty toasty on the bus on a sunny day in Transkei. Hopped on the shuttle to Coffee bay and took about five minutes when the party was already on inside the vehicle. Quarters of black label going around..
Getting to the Coffee shack was a pleasant reunion. Set my sturdy little tent up in no time and joined a few newly maid friends for a swim. This is the life mate, as good as it gets. Coffee bay is the place where all the hippies crawl out of their caves and the grass is a rather green so to speak. Also a laid back Xhosa community. First evening turned into a party and as memorable as it was, can't really remember/ don't wanna go into further details..
Enjoyed a great 10km hike to the Hole in the Wall the next day and no sight of hangover! Must be the atmosphere? Saw a mussel rehabilitation project on the way and learned not to be a dassie. Most of the day was spent on the hike and soon after returning to the shack, left for a dinner at a Xhosa village nearby. Good food as always :) South Africa sneaks onto my figure effectively. A quiet evening after that and into the tent to fall asleep to the sounds of night under the stars of Mama Africa. What a wonderful place Coffee shack is, gorgeous mosaics in the bathroom and fresh orchids on the countertops. Free mussels and occasional oysters too! Need more seafood to recover from my biltong addiction. The last few days have been having biltong chilli bites instead of normal meals!
After two enjoyable nights in the busy communal-feel-to-it coffee bay, moved onwards to Port st. Johns (also on the wild coast). Before catching the shuttle bought a bulk of anklets etc from the lovely sisis.
Arriving in Port st. Johns was an experience after the shuttle ride where the driver stopped every five minutes to pick up locals into the same shuttle. Despite the rain it was clear this place is just as beautiful as people who have been here kept saying along the way. Got welcomed in Jungle Monkey backpackers the very minute I got in. Highly recommend the place! Ended up choosing the dorm over camping since the rain got heavier and heavier by the minute.
After a good night sleep took a hike to the blowhole near second beach and the hike itself was worth getting up in the morning. Saw a man nearly get killed going too near the blowhole, kids don't do stunts! Enjoyed fresh fish for lunch by the beach and kept wondering wether life can and will get any better than this? Hitched a ride with the guide back to town to make it to the cruise on the river (the boat is named aptly the cirrhosis of the river). Will hate to leave this place behind tomorrow! I seriously understand people who leave everything behind and move here and start growing their own crops and throw away the cell phone. Not to worry though, my time has not come yet! So tomorrow back to Oudtshoorn via PE. Blah..
