After leaving Bandiagara headed off to Dourou, a little village where we had lunch on a roof top and after the hottest hours of the day we started our descend towards the village of Nombori. Took us around two hours to reach the bottom, incredible sights on the way down the Bandiagara escarpment. Enjoyed a tasty dinner cooked by the Dogon with the best, though boniest, chicken I*ve ever had. Went to bed early and did a bit of star gazing before falling asleep.
The roosters have no sense of time here and they start making noise at about 4 AM and continue throughout the day. Donkeys have a fun habit of being loud before dawn as well. After a breakfast of Dogon Doughnuts we started our morning hike of 8 km towards Tireli where spent a good few hours of siesta during the hottest time of day and enjoyed lunch of couscous. It was insanely hot already 8 AM let alone around noon, got to see Dogon mask dancing before continuing on the hiking. They had arranged the funeral ceremony for us and it was magical. Afternoon hike was about 6 km and much easier than the morning. Reached the village of Ireli reasonably early and by that time most of us were fed up with the kids trying to grab our water bottles. In places like the Dogon country it*s easy to see the negative affects of tourism.
Enjoyed another night of roof camping and tasty Dogon food and taught a couple of guys a drinking game finnish style. They actually had cold beer in this village, well at least the first few bottles..
Woke up to animal sounds again and started the day shopping a mask and other little souvenirs. Took a little tour around the nearby villages with the kids harassing us again. Little hike of 3 km to Banani for lunch and a noon ascend up the escarpment to meet Madge. Would*ve easily spent a week in the Dogon country, incredibly beautiful scenery and dramatic landscapes. All good things must come to an end I guess.
Spent a night in Sevare upgraded to hotel room and enjoyed a cold shower and a toilet seat. After a yummee dinner of local fish cooked with bananas and a relaxing night sleep in Sevare, started the day early for a long drive to Segou. Stopped for lunch in the bush and met up with the other Drago truck making its way down all the way from Malaga through western Africa. Will be spending another night in Segou and going on a boat ride on the Niger river soon. Good times.
