Richard & Michelle Hamilton's Travels
Today's mission was simple if not extravagant. To get to Murano, find the shop we purchased our kitchen pendant light shades from, and purchase a third one. Simple! We love Venice so getting up early and walking to the train station was not difficult from a motivation perspective. We ended up taking a regional slow service because the price of the fast train was four times the cost of this service. Arriving into Venice around 9.41am we immediately set out for Murano on the Valletta boat service, but not before we endured the usual crush of people waiting on the pontoon. This is our third time back in Venice and somethings just don't change, but we love it. Arriving in Murano we remembered which side of the canal to find the shop. There are a lot more pendant shapes for sale now and after a helpful owner of a shop that sold a similar shade we came upon the shop we purchased the pendants from two years ago. The lady remembered us and the girls (which is remarkable), and we caused a stir in the shop when we showed a photo or two of the kitchen with the pendants in. Connection made she set about getting the perfect pendant, and recommended a larger one to go in the middle. In the end we walked out with two new pendants, one large and one smaller to match the existing ones. We were very lucky the right reds were available. We are now travelling (as the girls will remember from our last trip) with a very heavy bag of glass. R was really keen to buy some drinking glasses, but thought better once he saw the prices, €60 a glass! After a pizza & drink near where we had lunch with Emily and Abby on Murano (wonder if they can remember where this was), M went on a shopping hunt for a few presents. We caught the Valletta back to the main island group, and decided to walk back to the railway station from the far side. This was fun, and covered a different part of the town from our last visit, but we both looked forward to the seat on the train. It was a brief reacquaintance with one of the worlds most remarkable places. We arrived before 10am and left at 3.15pm, but it was well worth the return. Mission complete - light pendants secured. Next mission, to get home not one but two pieces this time. We arrived back in Verona to an awaiting driver, who whisked us back to the apartment in an attempt to save our legs for our evening stroll. After a short break we were off again this time walking several kilometres around the river edge taking in the sights, all with a plan to get to the supermarket to buy dinner. After a slight delay due to present shopping, which involved R returning to the apartment to drop off purchases, we eventually arrived at the supermarket just as the doors closed. So plan B was a walk around the block to an alternative supermarket, which we did not know about but a friendly local gesticulated in the general direction or where it could be found - we did wonder where we were headed, and if we had understood correctly. A walk back to the apartment past the Arena, and R was on very late dinner duty (but not before R purchased a very large gelato for desert, probably last for several days). We are debating what we want to cover tomorrow as would love to explore Verona a little more, but Lake Garda also beckons - hmmm, such choices when on holiday.
