Richard & Michelle Hamilton's Travels
It rained over night and was still lightly raining when breakfast arrived, so breakfast was spent inside the hotel room at the little table & two chairs provided. A quick pack and we checked out of La Rosa dei Venti bed and breakfast. We would recommend this to anyone staying in Positano, albeit you will need to be fit to climb the 300 plus steps from the ocean. Today was more of a shopping day with both of us buying clothes produced locally. More pressure on the baggage we brought over, (later in the day we investigated another bag option in Sorrento). A quick lunch on the seafront with bakery goodies, and we were clambering back up the steps to get our bags to meet the driver we had hired to take us to Sorrento. The journey over to Sorrento was relaxing and rewarding. The driver and car (Mercedes E Class. Mercedes and Audi appear to be the chosen brands for limousine services), were very smooth and the traffic not so adventurous as previous outings. We chose the car as it was a marginal cost over public transport, we didn't have the hassle of trying to get our bags over several large hills to get the bus and got dropped off at the door of our Sorrento hotel which was quite a hike uphill yet again from the town centre! Sorrento is very different and facing the opposite way to Positano. Where Positano at this time of year was facing the sun, Sorrento almost faces away from it, although our hotel balcony did get the late afternoon sun on it. Hotel Helios is up on the hill over looking the harbour, with views of Naples and Mt Vesuvius from the bedroom balcony. This boutique hotel had the best check in process we have experienced of any hotel with very friendly and assistance focused staff. The room is great, being large and well appointed, and the hotel is small catering to roughly 16 rooms. Sorrento is a bustling town with 15,000 inhabitants which swells to over 50,000 a day during peak summer periods. We learnt tonight there are over 97 hotels here in this very tourist oriented town. Add in the bed and breakfast options and this place seems to be over catered for, but I guess they must come, and they must fill up. We took the hotels advice on dining down at the mariner at a local family run restaurant that seems to be well mentioned in different travel brochures. It was a cheap and enjoyable pasta and seafood meal. During the meal we did some reading on what to do around Naples and Sorrento. We were reminded again of the crime rate, especially pickpocket thefts on trains, so are planning carefully our next few days. Capri tomorrow and Pompeii on Tuesday, Naples Wednesday and to Tuscany on Thursday. Ciao for now.
