Richard & Michelle Hamilton's Travels
Our arrival at Hotel Marco Polo was introduced by advising us we were one of five guests in the entire hotel, and by the way we have a wedding party coming tonight, and it's not like a NZ wedding - it will go all night. We had visions of limited sleep, especially when we met the wedding party leaving the old town in their cars. Think my big fat Greek wedding scene, where cars are honking consistently through the town on their way to our hotel with bow & ribbons tied to their side mirrors. Amazingly we slept right through all the noise. The staff in the morning advised it had been very noisy but no one complained. A quiet day walking, walking, walking. We were a little slow to get going today, but we were on time to follow the masses off to church in the old town centre. We have captured some interesting video from outside several church's as they sung prayer. Other than the church goers the town was deserted. 70 people live in the old town over winter, with a standing population of 2500 people in the wider town. In summer the number swells to 50,000 people. We are in the off-season so most of the tourist attractions are not operating, so we have to make our own fun (if walking is your thing). We purchased a bakery lunch and walked around the bays to find a quiet location overlooking the Adriatic Sea and the old city (across the water). MH: I am having fun taking photos of the spring flowers, walking along by the rocks & pathway here were miniature pink cyclamen flowering. The water is beautifully clear, with little fish very visible near the surface, along with the sea bottom. It is also stunningly cold as Michelle was later to discover (when seeking therapy for sore feet), colder than the Waihi gorge river she was heard to say. Our walk around the bays led us to the car ferry terminal with a ferry waiting (every ferry has left on time to the minute). Being in need of a rest we purchased a $6 return ticket and headed to Orebic,15 minutes away, where a further walk in the 23 degree sun along the foreshore beckoned us. The reward of a good cold beer sitting out by the beach at the most amazing four star hotel was the second highlight of our unscheduled trip across to the mainland, (the first was views of Korcula from the water). The Adriatic Hotel we would absolutely recommend to anyone coming this way. We were shown a room which was stunning in the way it had been renovated with a stylish sea theme. The best part, it is relatively cheap in the off-season, and it only has six rooms. The third reward after a further walk was our first gelato ice cream, which was my real motivation for hopping on the ferry back in Korcula. We returned on the ferry footsore, attempted to barter for a taxi, but was refused, so walked the the two kilometres back to the hotel, where we are now sitting resting before heading out for dinner. The good news is our transport to Dubrovnik is no-longer leaving at 6.15am. We get to sleep in, for 7.30am pickup and two hour drive to Dubrovnik through some very rocky territory. No boats running in the off-season. I did attempt to charter a boat!! In the off-season there is not much to do, or open in Korcula; and during the busy season it would be too busy. It's a lovely and very scenic place, but only warrants a days stay, unless chilling out. We went to the same very family-owned restaurant twice. One, because the food was delicious & very reasonably priced, and two, it was basically the only place open in all of Korcula. We were basically the only guests too on the second night! The bonus was we got fabulous service with a larger complimentary plate of restaurant bite-sized delights to start with (think home preserved anchovies & salted sardines, garlic marmalade & tuna pate served with grilled toast) with a taster of a local white wine. As you can gather, we think Croatian food is wonderful. We both tried the many types of local brandy, on both nights, including walnut brandy, plum brandy, which is very unlike us. We don't think the restaurant made any money this night given the profits were being drunk by the staff & their acquaintances! This place was also interesting as it was in a very old building with the kitchen visible right beside the diners, no door or glazed windows, but at least they provided blankets...
