Our first bus ride was full of all sorts of antics! Our couch was a lot better than I was expecting! I think my expectations were really just of an old school bus and us sitting bored for hours! But there was ipod connectivity, flat screen TVs, microphones, a fridge, everything you could need to not blow your brains out on the long drives!
Today we drove from Dubrovnik to Bosnia stopping at Mostar, a small town on the way, which had an old town and an old bridge they had reconstructed from when it was demolished in the Yugoslav war. We made our way through the tiny street that resembled an ancient town with stalls and through to the bridge that was 25 metres from river bellow. Daredevils are known to attempt the huge height at a big risk. Hamish and Andy did a segment on this and the process looked torturous. The height was just too intense and caused you to get winded or seriously injured if you didn't do it right! One of the guys on our tour, Luke was about 2 seconds off climbing over the railing to do it when the men who make money off jumping off it told him he couldn't do it unless he paid 50 euro! What??!! What a money making scheme. Probably for the best though… Things could definitely have gone seriously wrong there.
We got back on the bus and made our way to Sarajevo. We had a small bus tour of the city and saw where Franz Ferdinand was assassinated. That night we treated to a traditional meal of creamy chicken soup, a beef tanjin and roasted apple. Amazing! The town actually really resembled the things we saw in Morocco. It had really cool shops with lanterns and rugs and trinkets and the streets were old and narrow with cobblestones. Pretty cool vibe!
Next day we were back on the bus heading to Belgrave in Serbia. As part of our tour we stopped at a museum about the 1993 massacre in Srebrenica. I don't think any of us were really prepared for what we would see. We had learnt about the issues of post Yugoslavia and we had made a stop in Srebrenica where a massacre of Muslim people in Bosnia took place. The thing that really struck us all was how recent these events took place. I was only FOUR when this happened and there is no way we could ever comprehend events like this happening in our world of fairytales and make believe. Even worse was the vivid footage that was shown of thousands of people fleeing for their lives. We all took the time to really take it in and reflect on the events before heading off in a very sombre mood.
That night we checked into our hostel and organised a pub crawl to take us around. There was not much interesting to see in the Belgrade nightlife on a Monday. Absolutely NOTHING going on! Luckily we had a gorgeous Serbian man as our tour guide whose career was in all types of modelling. When we reached the last location and they were about to close half made there way home and the rest of us went in search of a good Monday nightclub. Which apparently does not exist. Or in the words of our dodgy helpers is 'not working.' We didn't believe him and persisted to find our way with no means of Internet and a confusing map. We walked past a shop when all of a sudden this man is ushering us into the 'teddy bear café' for late night drinks! Luke and I welcomed the offer and went in while the others wondered what the hell we were doing! Understandably haha turned out our risk paid off as he gave us the wifi password and then offered to walk us to the club we wanted to go to! Legend. Love meeting unexpectedly helpful people when travelling, just gotta take the risk!
Turns out we couldn't actually find the proper place to save ourselves and we ended up just stopping in a bar having a drink and taxiing back to our hostel. To find the rest of our crew had decided to have a pyjama party and consume all the free spirits the hostel receptionist Ninad gave them! So we immediately joined in and played some old school truth or dare. What a way to get to know people.
